Leg machines are an incredible addition to any home gym. They offer targeted workouts for different leg muscles, and are used by beginners, professional athletes, and everyone in between. Leg machines work by limiting your range of motion, helping you maintain proper form through controlled movement.
At Fitness Experience, we carry a wide range of different leg machines, including machines for quads, hamstrings, calves, and more. We also have multi-station machines to give you a compact way to work out your entire lower body!
Leg press machines build your quads, hamstrings, and glutes. They’re operated by pushing weighted plates with your legs; there are horizontal, vertical, and 45-degree leg press machines. Leg press machines activate many of the same muscles as squats.
Hack squat machines offer a workout that’s somewhere in between a leg press machine and a classic barbell squat. Weights are positioned on your shoulders; you then squat down and push up. Hack squats build your quads, hamstrings, and glutes, but also require you to engage your core.
Leg curl machines are designed to target the hamstrings—as an added benefit, they also engage your calves. You can perform leg curls either lying facedown or sitting. Leg curls work similar muscles to Nordic curls or Romanian deadlifts.
Leg extension machines target your quadriceps. To perform a leg extension, you sit with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle, place your ankles flush with the padded portion of the machine, then extend your legs straight, lifting weights.
Calf raise machines work your calves; there are both standing calf raise machines (which primarily target the gastrocnemius muscles) and seated calf raise machines (which primarily target the soleus muscles).
Multi-functional leg machines combine two or more different leg machines together to give you a full lower body workout. Some multi-functional leg machines are large enough to accommodate two or more people simultaneously; they’re a great choice for home gyms where space is at a premium.
The leg machine you should choose for your home gym depends on both your fitness goals and the equipment you already own. Leg machines are perfect for targeting specific muscles in the legs.
As with any piece of equipment, leg machines have advantages and disadvantages. Leg machines isolate specific muscles and limit your range of motion, which can help you develop proper form and increase your strength. Choose the muscles you want to target, get the appropriate machine, and once your technique is perfected, combine machine workouts with free weight workouts.
Multi-functional machines are a great choice for people who want multiple leg machines, and for home gyms where two or more people want to work out simultaneously. A high-end multi-functional machine can replace several other machines, so it can be well worth the investment.
